Why Unfinished Wood Craft Shapes?
Unfinished wood has a unique charm and versatility that can elevate any DIY decor project. When it comes to adding a touch of whimsy and natural beauty, our 3D Butterfly shapes are a perfect choice. Whether hanging them on the wall as a standalone art piece or incorporating into your next crafting endeavor, these 3D wood butterflies are sure to add a special touch to your space.
Behind-the-Scenes Creation Process
The first step in creating a 3D wooden butterfly is choosing the right type of wood. Different woods have unique grain patterns and colors. Our personal favorite is Baltic Birch, which is not a specific species of Birch but a general designation of
plywood from Russia, Finland and nearby Baltic states. It has a nice, natural color and a smooth grain that is absolutely perfect for painting and staining. We use it for nearly all of our handmade wooden nursery decor products.
Using 1/8" thick masked Baltic birch, we cut our butterfly wings, base and connector piece on our laser cutter at the dimension requested by the customer. This is a super quick process and ensures a smooth, professional cut.
The various components of the butterfly, such as the wings, the body and the connecting section which holds the wings to the base, are carefully assembled with wood glue to create a cohesive and lifelike sculpture. We check both wings to make sure they're evenly balanced and rest them on objects at either side, to hold that position. Once the wings have dried, the butterfly in inspected for any areas that may need to be touched up with sandpaper. Then, it's ready for packaging.
The beauty of a handmade 3D wooden butterfly lies in the attention to detail and the personal touch that goes into every step of the creation process. Creating our 3D wooden butterfly is not just a craft—it is a labor of love that requires skill, patience, and creativity, from the moment we first designed our butterfly on paper, translated it into a file fit for our laser, all the way to the moment it is packaged. Our handmade process allows us to infuse our work with a sense of artistry and individuality that sets these crafts apart from mass-produced pieces.
